Cummings Sets Precedence For 2011 Australian Cup

Precedence has been well prepared to win the 2011 Australian Cup

The 2011 Australian Cup Betting markets have thrown open a wealth of opportunities with at least six well recognised horses set to line up under double figure odds.

One of those runners is Precedence which at last check was $6.00 on the Luxbet fixed price markets.

Precedence is a multiple Group 1 starter including of course the Melbourne Cup where he finished eighth in  2010.

Despite missing a place by a decent margin, it wasn’t actually a bad run after settling back as far as 21st and still being 17th with 400m to go.

First up this season the five-year-old as expected finished well back in the CF Orr with the 1400m way too short a journey.

Last start he lined up in the St George Stakes over 1800m and many expected a similar result as he was paying as much as 20 to 1.

He ended up finishing second in that race though behind Heart Of Dreams and he’s attracted the attention of plenty of punters going into the Australian Cup.

The main reason of course is the extra distance with the 2000m starting to get into the real winning territory for this horse at this stage in his career.

Legendary trainer Bart Cummings travelled to Melbourne to oversee the final track work of Precedence before the Australian Cup and liked what he saw.

”He went very nice. He worked home the last three furlongs (600 metres) in 37 seconds on the outside of the course proper and I’m very pleased with the way he’s going at the moment.

”We haven’t won one (Australian Cup) for a while, so I hope so. The further the race the better, I think. If he happens to get a nice draw, he has a good chance,” Cummings said.

Last year Cummings missed out on claiming his 14th Australian Cup when Sirmione was just edged out by Zipping.

With his stables unusually short on weight-for-age talent at the moment, Cummings has focussed a good deal of attention on Precedence.

That means you know he’s going to be well prepared and a good chance to claim his first race since the Moonee Valley Cup last October.
