Karuta Queen Faced With Dilemma Ahead of the 2011 Golden Slipper

Karuta Queen is on track to start as one of the two favourites for the 2011 Golden Slipper at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse on April 2, 2011.

The super talented two-year-old is currently unbeaten over four race starts, including the Wyong Classic and the Gold Coast Magic Millions.

Karuta Queen won the $2 million Magic Millions last start on January 15, 2011, by an incredibly three lengths.

The Not A Single Doubt filly will have just one more race start before the $3.5 million Golden Slipper in 3 weeks’ time.

Karuta Queen is currently second favourite for the 2011 Golden Slipper, paying odds of $7.50 at Luxbet.

Her trainer, Neville Layt, will be deciding between either the Group 3 Sweet Embrace Stakes at Warwick Farm on Saturday, or the Listed Black Opal Stakes at Canberra on Sunday, as option for her only lead-up race to the Slipper.

Neville Layt was going to decide where to run his champion filly depending on how she drew in the barriers.

“I’m going to accept for both races and see what barrier she gets and let the barrier answer the question,” Layt said on Tuesday.

”The Black Opal is my home-town race but winning either race will be enough to get her into the Slipper. “

However, Karuta Queen has been incredibly unlucky, drawing barrier 11 in the 2011 Sweet Embrace Stakes and barrier 12 in the 2011 Listed Black Opal.

Karuta Queen has won more than $1.35 million in prize money in her short career, but the majority of her earnings do not count in the 2011 Golden Slipper order of entry because they were won from restricted races.

With the filly only having $84,000 in the bank counting towards her Golden Slipper entry, Neville Layt will have a very difficult decision to make.

“Whatever she runs in on the weekend, it will be her only run before the Slipper,” he said.
