King Diamond Among 2011 Adelaide Cup Nominations

Mark Kavanagh’s in-form four-year-old gelding King Diamond could back up from his weekend win at Flemington by contesting the $400,000 Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) at Morphettville next Monday, March 14.

King Diamond was one of 31 stayers nominated for the 2011 Adelaide Cup.

Danewin four-year-old King Diamond scored his second successive win last Saturday with a tidy victory in the Listed Roy Higgins Quality (2600m) at Flemington’s Australian Guineas Day.

In the Roy Higgins, King Diamond carried a hefty 58.5kg to victory and will advantage from the big drop back in weight to the 54.5kg he has been allocated for the Adelaide Cup.

Originally King Diamond was set to carry 53.5kg in the Cup, but his Flemington win saw the handicappers hand down a 1kg penalty.

Roy Higgins runner-up Vesper has also been nominated to back-up in the Adelaide Cup on Monday, the Lloyd Williams-owned Zabeel four-year-old having won the Listed Victoria Gold Cup (2000m) two starts back.

Reigning Adelaide Cup winner Capecover has also been nominated this year, the eight-year-old back to defend their title having won the event 12 months ago.

Capecover is the 57.5kg top-weight for this year’s Adelaide Cup followed by the Robert Hickmott-trained Mourayan set to carry 57kg.
