Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
With the 2011 Blue Diamond Stakes taking place this Saturday February 26, 2011, and Sepoy on track to be the shortest priced favourite in almost 30 years, the Races.com.au team are wondering whether a Blue Diamond Stakes victory for Sepoy is actually set in stone.Sepoy began his three race winning streak on October 3, 2010, when he won the Listed Maribyrnong Stakes at Flemington.
Since then Sepoy has been the convincing winner of the first two legs of the Blue Diamond -The Blue Diamond Preview and the Blue Diamond Prelude- and has won each by three and a half lengths.
Sepoy has moved into $1.65 favourite at Luxbet to win the 2011 Blue Diamond Stakes in the same fashion.
However, have punters underestimated the colt’s classy competition?
Currently second favourite in the line of betting for the 2011 Blue Diamond Stakes is Hallowell Belle, who finished a gutsy third in the fillies’ version of the Blue Diamond Prelude last start, coming from the rear after having the toughest run of the race and blitzing home to place third.
Had circumstances been kinder, Hallowell Belle quite possibly could have had the title of 2011 Blue Diamond Prelude winner to her name.
Therefore, with the Peter Moody-trained filly already having luck on her side when she drew barrier 4 yesterday for the 2011 Blue Diamond Stakes, she may just pose more of a threat to Sepoy’s hold on the title than anyone expects.
Hallowell Belle is currently paying generous odds of $9 for the win at Luxbet.
Also in the market is Lee Freedman’s Atomic, who paid the $55,000 late entry fee into the 2011 Blue Diamond Stakes after he won his first start in the Listed Chairman’s Stakes at Sandown on February 9, 2011.
With his connections willing to forfeit the majority of his winnings for a start in the 2011 Blue Diamond Stakes, it is obvious that they believe their young colt has the ability to win the race.
Atomic is currently third favourite and paying $10 for the win at Luxbet.
Also hoping for an upset victory against Sepoy is the Exceed and Excel filly Anevay.
Anevay cemented herself as a Blue Diamond Stakes threat after her extraordinary win in last Saturday’s Listed Talindert Stakes.
The Tim Martin-trained two-year-old stormed to a remarkable 1.8 length victory over the classy field, and is currently paying very juicy odds of $21 in the Blue Diamond Stakes betting at Luxbet.
So while the majority of punters obviously believe the 2011 Blue Diamond Stakes to be a one horse race, the connections and trainers of the rest of the talented field clearly think otherwise.
