The 2011 Apollo Stakes is due to run as the feature race on Apollo Stakes Day at Rosehill Gardens this Saturday February 19, 2011.
Worth $250,000, the Group 2 Apollo Stakes is a weight-for-age race for horses aged three-years-old and upwards and is run over a distance of 1,400 metres.
The 2011 Apollo Stakes will run as Race 6 and is due to jump at 4.30pm (AEDST).
The current favourite at Luxbet is Hot Danish, paying $3.20 for the win.
Hot Danish finished third to much the same field in February 5’s Expressway Stakes, however, has won twice second-up at this 1,400 metre distance, and since she is sure to be fitter in this run you have to assume she is a certain top three finisher.
Our team is backing Hot Danish to run second in the 2011 Apollo Stakes.
The Races.com.au team is confident that Danleigh, who is currently paying generous odds of $9 a win at Luxbet, will come through to win the 2011 Apollo Stakes again this year.
Chris Waller’s Danleigh won last year’s Apollo Stakes from an outside barrier (13) when he was second-up from a spell, and considering Danleigh has drawn the widest barrier once again (10), and he is once again second-up, we think he has the ability and experience necessary to win the 2011 Apollo Stakes.
The seven-year-old gelding also won last year’s Apollo Stakes with jockey Hugh Bowman on-board, the same jockey who will ride him this Saturday, and after a very similar expressway stakes run as this year’s.
Danleigh has won eight of his 29 career starts so far and has accrued total career earnings of almost $2 million.
The Races.com.au team also like the look of Melito who is back from a spell this start.
Melito, who is currently second favourite in the betting order at Luxbet at $4.40, won a trial at Rosehill on February 15, and has demonstrated she is back to her best form.
However, Melito often improves from her first-up run and may not quite have the fitness to last the full 1,400 metres, so we are backing the Gerald Ryan-trained mare for a place instead of a win.
Melito will be ridden by jockey Brendon Avdulla and will jump from barrier nine. Also not to be forgotten is David Payne’s Centennial Park, who won the Expressway Stakes at this track on February 5, 2011.
Centennial Park beat most of this 2011 Apollo Stakes field in his last race and has won two of his four starts at this track over this distance.
Centennial Park has drawn barrier six for the race and will carry 59 kilograms.
Luxbet is currently offering odds of $7.50 a win on Centennial Park.
