2011 Mornington Stakes Won by Zedi Knight Over Launay

Six-year-old Caulfield based galloper Zedi Knight has claimed an upset win in the $100,000 Listed Mornington Stakes (1200m) this afternoon defeating a field of quality runners in one of the two black-type features on today’s Mornington race card.

After settling just behind early leader Sequallan, Zeditave gelding Zedi Knight found the lead by the home turn ridden to perfection by Craig Williams.

It was Williams’ second win on the trot at Mornington today having scored one race before with the up-and-coming Blue Diamond Stakes hopeful Masthead in the 2YO Inglis Premier.

On the straight a couple of the Mornington Stakes rivals tried to put the pressure on, but Zedi Knight ($8.50) was far too strong and pulled away to beat home the $2.50 favourite Launay by over a length.

The Mark Young-trained Secret Flyer ($14) finished an eye-catching third a further half-length away in a photo with fourth placegetter Harkaway ($14).

Back to his best today, Zedi Knight has now won seven of his 24 career starts.

Next up the 2011 Mornington Cup will take place 4:00pm (AEDST) where a 2011 Caulfield Cup exemption is up for grabs.
