Co-trained by Matthew Ellerton and Simon Zahra, Zeeno Rob Roy gelding Enjin Number Nine was given a beautiful ride by Glen Boss in the 2011 BMW Manfred Stakes and the pair were able to rise to the occasion and beat a field that included superstar Star Witness.
It was Peter Moody’s Sayahailmary who hit the front and set the pace while Ascot galloper Mister Monneypenny settled into second with eventual winner Enjin Number Nine in third.
On the home turn Enjin Number Nine swooped up through the field to hit the lead while Star Witness got caught out wide finding themselves with plenty of work to do.
In a brilliant burst of acceleration, Enjin Number Nine won running away eventually hitting the line two lengths ahead of the Peter Snowden-trained Bullbars while Star Witness could only manage third.
Ellerton stated post-race that they had been hoping to come and run second today and so was very happy with the win.
Connections said they had thrown Enjin Number Nine in the deep end, but he proved that he could match it at stakes level.
The $750,000 Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington on March 5 is now a real possibility for today’s Manfred Stakes winner, Enjin Number Nine bringing their career record up to three wins from just four starts.
