Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The premier race for thoroughbreds held in South Australia each autumn is the $400,000 Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) and this year the 2011 Adelaide Cup will take place at Allan Scott Park Morphettville on Monday, March 14.
Every year Adelaide celebrates Adelaide Cup Day with a public holiday, but you don’t have to be trackside to enjoy the betting as leading bookie Luxbet will have the hottest Adelaide Cup odds available online.
Adelaide Cup Day 2011 features a top line-up of stakes races to enjoy an autumn punt on.
Aside from the Group 2 Adelaide Cup, other races on the Adelaide Cup Day programme include the $200,000 Yallambee Classic (1200m) for three-year-olds and the $115,000 Group 3 R N Irwin Stakes (1100m).
The Adelaide Cup is run over the traditional Cup distance of ‘two miles’, the same as Flemington’s famous Melbourne Cup showdown on the first Tuesday of November.
Last year the 2010 Adelaide Cup was won by Capecover who finished a length ahead of Kerdem with Itstheone a short-head away third.
One of the best lead-up races to the Adelaide Cup that has served as a good guide for punters is the Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes (2600m).
The Lord Reims Stakes produced both the 2010 Adelaide Cup winner and placegetter, Capecover having placed third and Kerdem, back-to-back runner-up in the Adelaide Cup in 2009 and 2010, fourth.
This year the 2011 Lord Reims Stakes will take place at Morphettville on March 5, so keep a close eye on the runners as an indication for your Adelaide Cup betting.
When checking out the 2011 Adelaide Cup odds at Luxbet keep in mind that last year the $4.20 favourite Fairygem failed to finish in the money placing fourth, but the year before Anthony Cummings’ Zavite started the Adelaide Cup favourite and cruised to an easy two and a half length victory.
One horse heading towards the Adelaide Cup in March is five-year-old Zabeel mare Zauberin.
Zauberin was the horse that fell on Melbourne Cup Day last year at Flemington in the Lavazza Long Black (2800m) when jockey Blake Shinn broke his ankle and lost his Melbourne Cup ride on Precedence, who went on to finish eighth behind Americain.
Prepared by Russell Cameron, Zauberin showed she was back in form with a first-up win in the Flood Appeal Handicap (1620m) at Flemington on January 22 and is now being prepared for the Adelaide Cup.
The Adelaide Cup nominations will be taken on Thursday February 24 followed by the 2011 Adelaide Cup Final Field of acceptances out on Thursday March 10 and published here first at Races.com.au.
