Roughie Guest Wing has won the 2011 Perth Cup at Ascot this afternoon from a quality field in a tight finish just edging out 2009 winner Guyno in second. Guest Wing paid $27.70 for the win in today’s $400,000 Group 2 feature race.
There was drama at the start of the race, with no. 11 Rich Success being scratched at the barriers on veterinary advice after suffering lacerations in the stall.
Colour Correct also reared badly just before the field jumped, but jumped out strongly to take the lead early on. During the middle of the 2400m race favourite Ranger had no luck, travelling three wide at the 1600m as Big Ted took the lead towards the 1000m. Ranger managed to move up and share the lead with Big Ted before moving slightly clear. Grey mare Simply Adorable moved up strongly and took the lead around the final turn and into the straight. As Simply Adorable held strong at the front Ranger faded to finish 11th.
2009 Perth Cup winner Guyno looked to be the horse to beat in the run to the line, finishing very strongly, but it was roughie Guest Wing with jockey Brad Parnham who went with Guyno and was too strong to win by a neck. Simply Adorable held strong after a great run with jockey Patrick Carbery to grab third while second favourite Western Jewel was fourth.
Trained by Shane A Edwards, 4-year-old gelding Guest Wing’s career now stands at 18 starts for 3 wins, 3 seconds and 5 thirds. Before today’s win Guest Wing’s career prize money stood at just $56,152, but that tally is now up to a total of $315,152.
