Final Field & Betting Preview for 2010 Starstruck Classic

The $80,000 Listed Starstruck Classic (1600m) is set to take place this Saturday, December 11th, at Ascot Racecourse as part of the elite racing action of the AJ Scahill Stakes Day meeting.

The 2010 Starstruck Classic final field features 14 classy fillies and mares lead by the Michael Grant-trained Admiring, heading towards a run in the $400,000 Group 2 Perth Cup on New Year’s Day.

Well-bred Street Cry mare Admiring had an unlucky run in the Jungle Mist Classic two starts back, but returned to form on November 27 with a win in the Rockpool Bar & Grill Handicap (1600m), proving she has what it takes to win over the mile at Ascot.

Drawn well in barrier three and due to be ridden by Daniel Staeck, Admiring should start near the top of the Starstruck Classic odds despite her hefty 58kg weight allocation.

Another early favourite that the punters will be getting behind is Shamardal four-year-old Premardal, Todd Harvey’s mare coming off a tidy victory in the Listed Jungle Dawn Classic (1400m) after drawing a horror barrier.

On Saturday Premardal will jump from barrier one, further igniting her claims in the Starstruck.

The other runner to watch is up and coming Foreplay filly Playcidium Mint, a winner of two of her four starts to date including her big win in the Group 3 Lee Steere Classic (1400m) last Saturday and looking a top pick as one of the lightweights of the field.

Other noteworthy females lining up in this year’s Starstruck field include Jungle Dawn Classic third placegetter Canardly Miss and fellow Adam Durrant-trained stablemate Manila I Scream drawn ideally in barrier four, and improving five-year-old grey Little Grey Teapot also nominated for the 2011 Perth Cup along with Admiring.

The 2010 Thoroughbred Breeders WA Starstruck Classic is scheduled as Race 7 at Ascot on Saturday and is set to start at 4:57pm (local WA time).
