Pepperwood Beats Listen Son in 2010 Tattersall’s Recognition Stakes Upset

Last Saturday, November 27, Eagle Farm Racecourse in Brisbane was home to two black-type races including the $80,000 Listed Tattersall’s Recognition Stakes (1600m) where Pepperwood claimed an upset win over the favourite Listen Son.

In a similar result as the 2010 Winterbottom Stakes at Ascot, a long priced roughie scored victory in the feature race at the meeting with Liam Birchley’s six-year-old Pepperwood ($41) claiming a comprehensive three length win over odds-on favourite Listen Son ($1.50).

The Gerald Ryan-trained New South Wales galloper Pyramids ($16) added even more value to the winning trifecta finishing a further three quarters of a length away in third.

A brilliant ride by Pepperwood’s jockey Glen Colless saw the Easy Rocking gelding claim his first win in nearly a year, his seventh from a 36 start career that has earned $691,850 in prize money to date.

It was a massive improvement from Pepperwood’s most recent starts that included a distant ninth place finish to Rightson in the Listed Brisbane Handicap (1600m) a fortnight ago.

Rightson ($5) was one of the top fancies on Saturday, but faded to cross sixth, seven lengths back from the winner.

Connections will next run Pepperwood in the Listed Bernborough Handicap (1615m) at Doomben on Boxing Day, December 26.

Meanwhile, runner-up Listen Son could be aimed at the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) at Randwick next month according to trainer Tony Gollan.

The next big feature race to take place in Australia will be the $500,000 Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) at Ascot this Saturday.
