Whitefriars and Waratah’s Secret are currently battling for favouritism in the 2010 Winterbottom Stakes odds, the two classy sprinters leading the field for the $750,000 showdown at Ascot this Saturday November 27.
The Group 2 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) is one of Australia’s premier sprint features and is the second richest race held at the annual Perth Summer Racing Carnival.
Attracting a capacity field of 16 quality gallopers, the Winterbottom Stakes is shaping up as a cracker event and Whitefriars has opened as the narrow $4.60 favourite to win through Luxbet.
Drawn well in barrier three, the Rick Worthington-trained Sydney galloper is coming off back-to-back wins including their brilliant last start victory in the Group 2 Salinger Stakes (1200m) at Flemington.
However, Whitefriars will be ridden by Damien Oliver at 58.5kg on Saturday, a big increase in weight from the 52.5kg they carried last start.
This brings the $5 second elect Waratah’s Secret right into contention, David Harrison’s Oratorio four-year-old in great form having won the Prince of Wales Stakes here in October before running a strong second to Ma Ma Machine in the Colonel Reeves Stakes last start.
Drawn on the rails in barrier one, Waratah’s Secret carried 58.5kg to victory in the Prince of Wales and is our top pick in the Winterbottom Stakes field this year.
Only one other Winterbottom Stakes runner is at single figure odds with the Fred Kersley-trained Marasco paying $6.50 at Luxbet.
Eight-year-old Scenic gelding Marasco was in great form back in autumn winning two Listed races here on the trot but faded to finish eight first up this season in the Colonel Reeves Stakes.
Dropping back in weight from 68kg to 58.5kg this start, however, Marasco should improve second up and is still a genuine chance in the Winterbottom.
The next shortest-priced entries that have been popular Each Way picks for Saturday are Paul Jordan’s improving mare For Your Eyes Only at $10, last year’s runner-up Idyllic Prince paying $12 and local seven-year-old King Kool Kat into $13 after a fast finishing third in the Colonel Reeves.
Victorian galloper True Persusasion is also a $13 chance but is likely to be scratched after failing to get a flight to Perth.
Good looking roughies to add into your Winterbottom Stakes multiples for value include Adam Durrant’s in-form six-year-old Ma Ma Machine ($15), the Neville Parnham-trained Elliotto ($51) and Dante’s Volonte ($41) resuming after a three month spell.
The 2010 Burswood Winterbottom Stakes is scheduled as Race 7 at Ascot on Saturday and is due to jump at 3:45pm (local WA time).
