Perth Cup on the Cards for 2010 Tattersall’s Cup Winner Aquinas

Seven-year-old stayer Aquinas caused an upset result at Ascot’s Railway Stakes Day on Saturday, the double-figure roughie running away to win the $80,000 Listed Tattersall’s Cup (2100m).

The victory was a career highlight for Lark Hill trainer Bernie Miller as Aquinas ($14), ridden by experienced hoop Patrick Carbery, held on after a gallant run to beat home Brandy Lane ($7) by just a head.

Third place was a dead heat between Guyno ($6.50) and Double Barrel ($3.80) who finished a further length and a half away.

Street Value, the highly fancied $2.70 favourite, finished fifth nearly three lengths away from the winner.

Blackfriars gelding Aquinas, purchased for $24,000 at the Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale, has had 31 starts for six wins, Saturday’s victory pushing their earnings to $148,785.

The brave Tattersall’s Cup performance has Miller considering Aquinas for the $400,000 Group 2 Perth Cup (2400m) on New Year’s Day.

There are three great black-type Festival of Perth Racing features set to run this Saturday headlined by the 2010 Winterbottom Stakes.
