Pressday Returns to Form with 2010 Sandown Guineas Win

Chris Waller’s star Sydney galloper Pressday returned to form on Saturday November 13, winning the $350,000 Group 2 Sandown Guineas (1600m) at Betfair Park Racecourse.

Three-year-old Domesday colt Pressday, winner of the Group 1 TJ Smith (1600m) at Eagle Farm last season, was coming off a disastrous result in the Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington.

After rearing in the barriers Pressday finished a well beaten 11th that day, but on Saturday he made up for the earlier failure with a strong win in the 2010 Sandown Guineas.

Overcoming the rain affected track conditions, Pressday ($3.70) defeated the Peter Snowden-trained Chasse by half a length with Bigelow ($5) a further length away in third, a gallant performance for their first run on Heavy ground.

It was a bittersweet result for the connections of runner-up Chasse, Darley and Snowden attempting their third straight win in the Guineas.

Pressday has now won five of their eight career starts for $834,650 in prize money.

Waller has said he will avoid the sprint races in the autumn because of talent like Black Caviar and stick to the Group 1 mile features such as the Randwick Guineas and Doncaster Handicap with Pressday looking to improve his future value as a stallion.

Sandown Classic Day marked the end of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival but there is still plenty of racing action to get in on over in WA starting with the $1 million Railway Stakes this Saturday.
