Betting for the 2018 Group 1 $700,000 Altus...
Today the feature race at Flemington’s third Melbourne Cup Carnival meeting is the $1 million Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m), the classic fillies’ feature scheduled as Race 6 and due to jump at 2:55pm (AEDST).
The 2010 Crown Oaks, previously called the VRC Oaks, field features 12 quality three-year-old fillies following the scratching of #12 Bride Salama.
Red hot favourite in the Crown Oaks odds is Brazilian Pulse, the Michael Moroney-trained Wakeful Stakes winner paying $3.20 though Luxbet.
Brazilian Pulse has enjoyed the ideal preparation for her Crown Oaks assault today, with a second place in the Edward Manifold (1600m), third in the Thousand Guineas on a Slow Caulfield track and then a blitzing win in the Wakeful last start.
However, with a Heavy track and plenty of strong competition, we are tipping an upset Crown Oaks result and have Sasa the best chance to win.
Flemington – Race 6 – Crown Oaks Tips
- Races.com.au Favourite: #6 Sasa – Rated Special to Win at $5 through Luxbet
- Best Exotic Inclusions: #2 Brazilian Pulse, #5 Precious Lorraine, #7 Placement and #4 Heartsareforlove – Luxbet
The Tim Martin-trained Sasa represents great value at $5, the well-bred daughter of Encosta De Lago tipped to improve after an eye-catching fifth in the Wakeful Stakes where she came from well back in the field from a horror draw.
Drawn better today and can handle a bit of give in the ground.
Aside from the favourite Brazilian Pulse, who should be included in the exotics if the ground improves, three other fillies that look good Place chances are Precious Lorrain, Placement and Heartsareforlove.
David Hayes’ Precious Lorraine was strong in the AAMI Vase last start, running the ideal Oaks trial to finishing fourth behind Rekindled Interest. Another runner that needs a good track to run their best.
The Danny O’Brien-trained Placement ran second to Brazilian Pulse in the Wakeful last start, and is the Each Way pick of the field.
She was strong to the line then and is drawn well in barrier three today, ensuring the inside isn’t too choppy by race 6. 2000m is ideal and she should handle the Heavy track well having finished second to Dizlago in the Sportingbet Stakes on a Heavy Caulfield track two starts back.
Meanwhile Heartsareforlove may not be as suited to the distance, but John Thompson’s smart filly has been very consistent and has genuine claims if the tempo is on the slow side.
She enjoyed a second place finish in the Thousand Guineas before running third in the Wakeful – Heartsareforlove’s form not to be ignored.
