Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Following Brazilian Pulse’s win in the 2010 Crown Oaks, the next winner at Flemington today was Backgammon who beat home a field of top three-year-olds in the $150,000 Listed Myer Spring Fashion Stakes (1800m).
The strongest performer in the end, $9 chance at Luxbet Domesday gelding Backgammon scored just his second career victory today handing trainer Peter Snowden his third success at the Crown Oaks meeting.
One of the top fancies Zubbaya was fast out of the gates and instantly looked for the lead, taking to the front with Mick Price’s Crawfish moving up to settle in second.
Zubbaya was narrowly in front after they swung around the turn, with Crawfish challenging.
It was a tight and thrilling battle down the straight, as the field spread right across the track.
Any number of runners had their chance, with no clear winner emerging until there was just 100m to go.
This is when Backgammon hit the front and once jockey Mark Zahra got them clear, he opened up his stride and was too strong pulling away to outstay his rivals beating runner-up Domesky with Anthony Cummings’ roughie Kerchings in third.
After sitting near the front the whole way, Crawfish managed to hang on to finish fourth.
Two more races are still left to jump at VRC Crown Oaks Day today, with Race 8 the $150,000 Listed Swisse Vitamins Stakes (1100m) next at 4:25pm (AEDST).
