2010 Melbourne Cup Odds Update and Form Guide

News - Betting - Melbourne Cup
2 November 2010

With under 6 hours to go until the 2010 Melbourne cup, we have a quick look at the movers and shakers in the market, and the current odds.

You often hear the term ‘follow the money’ in betting circles. This means that a lot of money has been placed on a horse to win the race and an indication of this is the odds will shorten with the bookmakers.

Say the odds on offer are 10-1. If a lot of money comes for the horse, then the bookies will shorten its price to say 8-1. On big race days it takes A LOT of money for the bookies to shorten odds. Often the big experienced punters are causing these odds to shorten – the experts after spending countless hours studying the form. So it pays to consider horses that shorten in the market.

Horses that ease in the market are odds that may go from say 10-1 to 12-1. In this case, the bookmakers are struggling to take bets on the horse so they ease it out trying to attract some bets. Sometimes bookmakers will ease a horse because they don’t think it can win after doing countless hours on form, etc. It also pays to watch horses that ease in the market.

With less than 6 hours to go these are the significant market movers:

Since Saturday, Shocking has eased from $9 out to $12 and overnight has come into $11. We think this is as a result of no more rain coming and the horse having conditions to suit.

So You Think was $4 on Saturday. It came into $3.20 yesterday and the bookies keep getting hammered. They are struggling now to keep his price at $3, and we have heard nearly 45% of ALL bets to win have been placed on So You Think.

There has been a little money for Zipping, firming from $31 into $26. Some really good judges are tipping this horse to run the race of his life today.

Americain eased from $11 out to $14 yesterday, but a little money sees the French horse come into $13.

Descarado is steady at $14, which the market is telling us is the right price for this horse. Again, this has been highly rated by some professional punters.

Harris Tweed has eased from $21 to $26.

Monaco Consul has eased from $21 on the weekend to $31 yesterday and now you can get $34. We still rate this horse a great chance in the race.

Profound Beauty has eased from $26 to $31 – despite having a perfect track surface now the heavy rain has stayed away.

Holberg has been a big market mover opening at $31 on Saturday this overseas horse came into $21 yesterday and is now $19.

Maluckyday eased from $9 out to $10 yesterday, but came into a little as $8 today with the weight of support. Easing slightly to $8.50, Maluckyday is shaping as the one people want to be on outside of So You Think.
