Melbourne Cup Jockey’s Race View

The starter releases the field for the Melbourne Cup and no matter how experienced you are as a jockey the adrenalin is pumping through your body, you have 800 meters to get your horse settled and into the position you want. That is the distance the horses run down the straight the first time to the first corner, if you are caught wide then you have little chance of getting in.

Rounding the first turn at Flemington you want your mount very settled and dropping the bit nicely, you basically need to put him to sleep and to conserve energy. Coming up to the 1400 meters you start the huge sweeping turn which takes you from the 1400 meters to the top of the straight at the 500 meter mark. If you are back in the field you are watching the other horses around you seeing which is travelling well and thinking about which one you want to try and get behind so it drags you into the race. At about the 1000 meter mark you want to start to switch your horse on.

Coming up to the 800 meters there are going to be some horses that start to struggle and you need to stay out of their way and get to the outside, particularly if the track is wet and the horses are getting away from the rail you don’t want to be stuck down in the worse going on the rail. At the 600 meters you should still have cover and start fanning wide to find your running, we are going to move up and time our run to hit the lead at the clock tower and then power away and win the Melbourne Cup.

Could this be the race plan for Maluckyday, Precedence, Shoot Out or Americain? One thing for sure is they all have their job cut out to beat the superstar So You Think.
