Maluckyday – A Melbourne Cup Winning Chance?

Maluckyday is one of the most highly favoured horses in the 2010 Melbourne Cup, but is he a Melbourne Cup winning chance? We’ll begin with the points in his favour.

While he only has a single Group race win, it was an impressive run in the 2500 metre Lexus Stakes over Linton and Once Were Wild. That’s the kind of win that makes you think an early career Melbourne Cup win is possible.

A barrier 6 start and lightest weight of 51kg both work out fantastically for Maluckyday. Running so close to So You Think, yet carrying 5kg less, this should help Maluckyday to place even if he cannot pull off the win.

Now for the points that go against Maluckyday to win the Melbourne Cup.

His lack of experience could be a factor, especially as his only wet run was a third place in the Myer Tulloch Stakes in April. It was only a slow track, too, so it could go bad for Maluckyday if the track goes heavy.

Maluckyday is actually quite solid aside from the lack of experience, so a quinella with So You Think looks good. It would be foolhardy to pick an outright win over the more experienced runners, but there is enough of a chance there for a quinella with the favourite to have a lot of appeal.
