Prominent racehorse owner Lloyd Williams, who spent a fortune buying overseas horses to target the 2010 Melbourne Cup, has two runners in the 150th Melbourne Cup field for Tuesday’s $6 million showdown.
Williams will be represented by horses at both ends of the age spectrum in the 2010 Melbourne Cup with nine-year-old Zipping and four-year-old Linton both confirmed runners in the world’s richest handicap.
Veteran Danehill gelding Zipping is in career best form at nine years of age, the $4 million earner enjoying a brilliant spring campaign with a win in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington before finishing a gallant second to So You Think in the Cox Plate.
In the 2010 Melbourne Cup Zipping will jump from barrier 16 with Nicholas Hall aboard.
Lightly raced four-year-old Galileo gelding Linton has come right into Melbourne Cup contention after just eight race starts. Their spring has been the ideal Melbourne Cup lead-up with a third place in the JRA Cup, win in the Herbert Power Stakes and then a strong second to Maluckday in The Lexus Stakes at Flemington’s Derby Day.
Linton has suffered a blow for the 2010 Melbourne Cup with a wide barrier 23 draw, one on the inside of reigning champion Shocking, and will have Brett Prebble in the mount.
