Star Witness Wins Coolmore Stud Stakes – Derby Day Race 4 Results at Melbourne Cup Carnival

Race 4 at Flemington’s Victoria Derby Day today has been won by Danny O’Brien’s super colt Star Witness, who ran clear to claim victory in the $500,000 Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m).

Emerging as a genuine sprinter to watch out for, Blue Diamond Stakes winner Star Witness made it two Group 1 victories today, thriving over the Flemington straight.

It was a nice win after Star Witness didn’t get away well from barrier two, jockey James Winks soon recovering to get up behind the leading bunch.

Equal $5 favourite with Star Witness, Solar Charged jumped well and went towards the lead while Pressday bombed the start and never recovered.

Solar Charged held a narrow lead with Buffering up in second in the early stages, then with 400m to go Star Witness made their move up on the outside with Peter Moody’s Curtana also challenging.

In the end Star Witness was too good, beating home long-priced roughie Curtana, adding great value to the Trifecta, by around two lengths with the Mark Kavanagh-trained Shrapnel a half length further away in third.

Having backed up their impressive trackwork from Tuesday with a superior win today, trainer O’Brien has stated he will now take on boom sprinter Hay List and unbeaten mare Black Caviar and enter Star Witness for the Patinack Farm Classic on Emirates Stakes Day next Saturday.

The next race on the Victoria Derby Day card is a cracker not to be missed as Race 5, the $1 million Mackinnon Stakes (2000m), features a field full of 2010 Melbourne Cup hopefuls lead by So You Think.
