Salinger Stakes Won by Whitefriars – Victoria Derby Day Race 8 Results

The eighth race on the 2010 Victoria Derby Day card at Flemington has been won by Rick Worthington’s strong gelding Whitefriars who emerged the winner in the $300,000 Group 2 Salinger Stakes (1200m).

Coming off great Sydney form having placed second to Hot Danish in The Shorts and then winning a 1100m sprint at Randwick, five-year-old Arena gelding Whitefriars handled the heavy Flemington track conditions the best of the field today.

In a unique riding tactic, Craig Newitt speared straight to the far outside rail with Dubleanny after jumping, running her out on own extremely wide.

Despite holding an early lead, the risky move didn’t pay off for Dubleanny who faded out closer to the line.

With 100m to go, Whitefriars and jockey Jim Cassidy stormed to the front of the field and hung on to win ahead of a gallant Beaded with Response putting in a massive run down the straight for third.

The results were a massive upset, all three horses in the winning Salinger Stakes Trifecta at double figure odds.

There is just one race left to run at Flemington, so get ready to finish the day off with a big win by backing your favourite in the $250,000 Group 3 AAMI Business Insurance Stakes (1400m) at Luxbet now.
