2010 Melbourne Cup Weights

The 2010 Melbourne Cup weights were first released by Racing Victoria at the start of September, however since the original handicaps there have been a number of weight changes and penalties.

There are now just 47 horses still in contention for the $6 million Melbourne Cup (3200m), with that number set to be cut to the final 24-horse field plus four emergencies on Saturday as the Melbourne Cup final acceptances are taken.

Melbourne Cup weights and penalties are decided and handed down by Racing Victoria’s chief handicapper Greg Carpenter.

Current top weight in the Melbourne Cup field is reigning champion Shocking allocated 57kg and no horse in over three decades has carried 57kg to victory in the Melbourne Cup.

The Mark Kavanagh-trained Shocking carried just 51kg to victory in the 2009 Melbourne Cup, but having carried between 57 and 59kg at his last three starts the son of Street Cry is well equipped to handle his 2010 Melbourne Cup weight.

Following in the current Melbourne Cup handicaps with 56kg are dual Cox Plate champion So You Think, Chris Waller’s Metal Bender and international raider Campanologist.

The last Melbourne Cup winner to carry 56kg to victory was Japanese stayer Delta Blues in 2006.

This year Japan has their first horse in the Melbourne Cup since 2006, with Tokai Trick set to start with 54.5kg on their back.

2010 Melbourne Cup weight penalties have so far been handed down to:

  • Americain – 54.5kg (0.5kg penalty for Geelong Cup win)
  • Descarado – 54kg (1.5kg penalty for Caulfield Cup win)
  • Precedence – 53.5kg (3kg combined penalty for JRA Cup and Moonee Valley Cup wins)
  • Herculian Prince – 53.5kg (2kg penalty for The Metropolitan win)
  • Linton – 52kg (1kg penalty for Herbert Power Stakes win)
  • Eastern Aria – 51.5kg (1kg penalty for Park Hill Stakes win)

The current Melbourne Cup 2010 weights are listed below.
