So You Think has maintained his dominance as Australian racing’s superstar, winning the 2010 Cox Plate today at Moonee Valley, beating home a star studded field in the $3 million weight-for-age feature.
Absolutely faultless, So You Think made it back to back Cox Plate wins at just his 10th career start.
The Bart Cummings-trained champion started as the red hot favourite paying $1.55 to win at Luxbet, and all the punters that backed the favourite were well rewarded today.
The Australian racing community has a new turf champion, So You Think now hailed as the Phar Lap of our time.
Gai Waterhouse’s impressive mare More Joyous pinged to the front of the Cox Plate field early, leading the runners around the Moonee Valley track.
So You Think, ridden to perfection by Steven Arnold, settled well into second and veteran galloper Zipping not far behind.
With 1200m to go More Joyous was a length and a half clear of So You Think, Zipping travelling right on the back of the favourite.
On the straight, however, it was So You Think all the way as the magnificent High Chaparral four-year-old turned on the gas racing to the front to take the lead with 600m to go.
More Joyous held on for a while, but by the turn So You Think held a big lead by three lengths.
More Joyous continued to try her heart out, but just couldn’t run him down in the end as So You Think took on the speed and outpaced, outclassed and beat all of his rivals.
On the line it was So You Think ahead of Zipping ($19), who moved back to finish the Cox Plate runner-up a half head in front of track specialist Whobegotyou ($15).
It was Zippings’ fourth consecutive Cox Plate run, and his third time finishing in the money.
Sentimental favourite Shoot Out finished fourth.
So You Think has now won seven of his 10 career starts, today’s prize money boosting his total earnings to over $4.6 million.
The next big Group 1 race set to take place during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival is the Victoria Derby at Flemington next Saturday.
