Descarado Wins 2010 Caulfield Cup for Waterhouse – Caulfield Race 8 Results

DescaradoGai Waterhouse’s emerging four-year-old Descarado is the 2010 Caulfield Cup winner after beating home a field of star stayers in Race 8 at Caulfield today.

It was a brilliant ride by jockey Chris Munce, who kept Descarado back off the pace waiting for the final few hundred metres to make the winning move and hand Waterhouse her 102nd Group 1 victory and her maiden Caulfield Cup win to add to her impressive list of accolades.

The victory today was also Munce’s first Caulfield Cup win as a jockey.

Coming off a horror run at Flemington where High Chaparral gelding Descarado finished 14th to Zipping in the Turnbull Stakes, Descarado improved leaps and bounds today to score a dominant win in the $2.5 million Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m).

A Kiwi-bred runner, Descarado returned to form to put in the staying performance of the day and give the punters who backed him at a great $15 price through Ladbrokes.com.au the best payout of the Caulfield meeting.

Waterhouse’s other more fancied runner Herculian Prince took the early lead, with Alcopop settling last off the speed.

Odds-on favourite Shocking was also well back and got caught up in the running, never threatening.

Triple Honour overraced and got to the lead with 700m to go, as the other chances begun to make their move on the outside of the field.

Descarado kicked hard and stormed into the lead, while another New Zealand bred runner Harris Tweed threatened to steal the front running looming out wide.

Descarado and Harris Tweed battled it out, and just when Harris Tweed looked the winner, Descarado dug in and claimed victory in the 2010 Caulfield Cup.

In a photo finish for third, Monaco Consul took the honours finishing off the high paying Trifecta.

Following the Caulfield Cup action, two more races are scheduled to run at the track. The next is Race 9 – the $180,000 Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m) where a number of top mares of real claims.
