In a big form reversal from last week, Gai Waterhouse’s Herculian Prince has won the $400,000 Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) at Randwick today, giving Waterhouse her 100th Group 1 victory.
Racing’s leading lady has joined an elite list of turf greats to get to a century of Group 1 wins, her very first of which was also in The Metropolitan.
Herculian Prince was coming off a failed run where he finished last as the beaten favourite in the Colin Stephen last week, causing punters to be wary of him today as the ex-Kiwi galloper drifted out to $4.60 in the betting providing great value to those that stuck with him.
Fast away from the gates, five-year-old Herculian Prince opened up right away racing very keenly to take a lead of six to seven lengths ahead of the rest of the field.
No Wine No Song, the veteran that was the surprise winner in the Colin Stephen, sat second to Herculian Prince and was right in the race all the way.
Going down the back Herculian Prince still held seven lengths on his rivals before Mourayan moved up and sped away at the 800m mark to lead by two lengths.
It was an innovative and unusual ride by jockey Nash Rawiller who let Herculian Prince race away early and had him out to a big lead before pulling the horse back and letting the Robert Hickmott-trained Mourayan get around him.
Then in a chasing position, Herculian Prince ($4.60) was let loose a second time with 300m to go, chasing down Mourayan ($19) blasting to the front on the straight to storm home with an emphatic three and a half length victory.
No Wine No Song ($5.50) impressively held on to finish a long head further away in third.
The odds-on favourite Mr Charlie ($3.50) missed the start and was well back, never featuring.
Herculian Prince and Waterhouse now look back on track to tackle the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.
The next race at Randwick is the marquee event of the day with the $500,000 Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) jumping as Race 8 at 4:10pm.
Our favourite to cause an upset and take out the Epsom at a great price is Black Piranha currently at $17 through Sportsbet.
So get in on the action and bet now at [sportsbet], where you will get better odds than the TAB and enjoy a bigger payout!
