Betting for the 2018 Group 1 $700,000 Altus...
Gai Waterhouse’s Caulfield and Melbourne Cups hopeful Descarado scored a sensational victory in the $175,000 Group 2 Hill Stakes (1900m) at Rosehill on Saturday.
High Chaparral four-year-old Descarado ($5.50) ran a promising Cup trial in the 2010 Hill Stakes, taken to the front early by jockey Peter Robl and holding on to beat the favourite Triple Honour ($2.90) by a length with Peter Snowden’s improving mare Purple ($3.70) a further two and a half lengths back in third.
AJC Derby runner-up Descarado was coming off two uninspiring runs finishing 10th and sixth in the Warwick Stakes and Theo Marks Stakes respectively this spring, but improved on Saturday to score their maiden stakes victory from 12 starts.
Online bookie Sportsbet currently have Descarado as a $21 chance for the 2010 Caulfield Cup on October 16 and are paying $41 for Descarado in their 2010 Melbourne Cup betting.
Waterhouse is looking at the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) at Caulfield on October 9 as a next step for Descarado a week before the Caulfield Cup.
Other features races at the Rosehill meeting on Saturday included the Group 2 Shannon Stakes (1500m) where outsider Firebolt pulled away after straightening to score an impressive victory and the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes (1800m) won by consistent colt Retrieve.
