Online bookies across the country have slashed the odds on the Mark Kavanagh-trained Whobegotyou to win the 2010 Cox Plate after the weight-for-age star scored back-to-back victories in the Group 2 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley on Saturday.
Five-year-old Street Cry gelding Whobegotyou was having his second-up spring start in the Dato following his eye-catching second to So You Think in the Memsie Stakes last month.
On Saturday Whobegotyou ($3.10), ridden patiently by Michael Rodd, held strong ahead of a field full of classy rivals to defeat Horse of the Year Typhoon Tracy ($4) in the 2010 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes by an emphatic two lengths, with $2.70 favourite Shoot Out in third a further length away.
Following the win, Sportsbet cut Whobegotyou’s odds from $13 to $7 to win the Cox Plate on October 23, now second favourite behind So You Think ($3.80).
Whobegotyou has now won eight of his 23 career starts, including five from six at Moonee Valley.
His only defeat at the course was in last year’s Cox Plate when the unfavourable track conditions saw Whobegotyou finish sixth to the Bart Cummings-trained So You Think.
Kavanagh has stated Whobegotyou is now unlikely to run again until October 9, when they attempt back-to-back wins in another spring feature, the Group 1 Yalumba Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield.
It was a bumper race meeting at Moonee Valley on Saturday with two other Group races decided.
In the Group 2 Stocks Stakes (1600m) the Mark Webb-trained Avienus ($12) claimed an upset win in the mare’s feature as warm favourites Faint Perfume ($5) and Valdemoro ($4.60) finished ninth and 13th respectively.
Earlier in the day, Hay List ($2.50) scored their 10th win from 12 career starts in the Group 3 McEwen Stakes (1000m) beating Catapulted and Reward For Effort to the line.
