Proving to be one of the biggest movers in the 2010 Melbourne Cup betting markets, Ciaron Maher’s in-form galloper Moudre further staked their claims in the Cup with a win at Caulfield on Saturday.
Five-year-old Blevic gelding Moudre went out as the clear $2.45 favourite and easily held on to defeat Diggersanddealers ($41) by an emphatic three and a quarter lengths in the Listed Hocking Stuart Quality Stakes (1700m).
The win has again seen Moudre’s price shorten dramatically to win the 2010 Melbourne Cup on Tuesday November 2 at Flemington.
Starting as a long-shot chance when the first Melbourne Cup odds were released, Moudre shortened into $26 last week but is now equal third-favourite paying $17 at Sportsbet.

Moudre shares the same line of betting for the $6 million handicap with Sydney Cup winner Jessicabeel and top international hopeful Sans Frontiers.
The 2010 Caulfield Cup on October 16 is Moudre’s first major spring target before the Melbourne Cup.
Following their recent good form, which also included a win over 1410m at Flemington at the start of the month, Moudre is now the $10 favourite in the Caulfield Cup odds markets at Sportsbet.
Second favourite for the Caulfield Cup is Dariana, the Bart Cummings-trained Queensland Derby winner still the $13 top elect for the 150th Melbourne Cup.
Moudre shares a similar story to last year’s Melbourne Cup favourite Alcopop, the improving galloper trained out in the ‘bush’ at Warrnambool.
His rise to fame, however, threatens to be thwarted before the full story unfolds.
Yet to qualify for either of the Cups, Moudre must win the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield on September 18 to ensure he makes the Caulfield Cup final field.
Owner Colin McKenna, who has rejected recent offers to sell Moudre for up to $2 million, is confident the stayer will win in the Naturalism but says if he doesn’t there are other options to earn a spot in the Cups.
“He likes big tracks and we could always have a crack at the Turnbull Stakes to get into the Melbourne Cup,” McKenna said.
