By The Way Long Shot Chance for 2010 Melbourne Cup

Ballarat-based trainer Mark Lewis is aiming high this Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, targeting the 2010 Melbourne Cup and Caulfield Cup with his five-year-old gelding By The Way.

By The Way is one of 253 early entries for the 150th Melbourne Cup, including 45 quality international horses, after nominations were announced on Tuesday.

The early favourites in the Melbourne Cup betting markets at include the likes of reigning champion Shocking, Bart Cummings’ star mare Faint Perfume and Irish raider Profound Beauty.

By The Way is one of the lesser known hopefuls fighting for spot in the 24-horse final field for the $6 million Melbourne Cup on Tuesday November 2 at Flemington.

The recent second-up winner of the $30,000 T.R. Trevaskis 0-82 Handicap (1200m) at Sandown certainly has the breeding to become the 2010 Melbourne Cup champion.

By The Way is a son of Street Cry, who was the sire of last year’s Melbourne Cup winner Shocking.

Despite his Street Cry connection, By The Way is yet to prove himself over 1400m but has trainer Lewis convinced he is a stayer.

Working on getting his rating up in time for the 2010 Melbourne Cup, Lewis has also nominated By The Way for the 2010 Caulfield Cup, which attracted 235 nominations this year.

By The Way has had 12 starts for five wins to date earning $88,681 in prizemoney.

He will have his next run in the $70,000 Gay Icarus Handicap (1400m) at Caulfield on August 28.
