The nominations for the 2010 Tatts Cox Plate are in and the list of 186 quality stayers ready to contest the $3 million event is one of the most impressive in recent years.
This year the 2010 Cox Plate will take place at Victoria’s esteemed Moonee Valley Racecourse on Saturday October 23 and is on the agenda for a number of Australia’s top thoroughbreds.
Many Cox Plate nominees have been paid up for the other Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival feature events including the race of the year, the $6 million Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m).
Classy horses ready to add a Cox Plate win to their list of achievements include last year’s Melbourne Cup winner Shocking, the Gai Waterhouse-trained Theseo, Peter Moody’s champion mare Typhoon Tracy and reigning champion So You Think representing the legendary Bart Cummings.
Premier Sydney-based trainer Gai Waterhouse also has American import Cannonball, Descarado, Herculian Prince, More Joyous, Mutamayez, New Day Rising, Once Were Wild, Rock Kingdom and Zutara nominated for the Cox Plate.

As the Cox Plate nominees progress through their spring racing campaigns connections will make the decision whether to press on for a run in the classic, with the Cox Plate Field of acceptances announced on October 19.
In other 2010 Cox Plate news the Moonee Valley Racing Club has announced the race will be run at 5:35pm for the first time, the later timeslot ensuring Australia’s premier weight-for-age event will receive the best media coverage.
The aim is to have the Cox Plate occupy an evening timeslot and become the country’s best night racing event by 2012.
