This Saturday the action and excitement of the 2010 Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival gets underway at Caulfield racecourse with the running of the first Group race of the season, the $125,000 Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m).
Eleven excellent hopefuls will take to the track in the 2010 Bletchingly Stakes ready to kick-start their spring campaigns with a stakes win, including the pronounced favourite Shoot Out.
The John Wallace-trained winner of the Group 1 AJC Derby (2400m) back in April is having his first-up run in the Bletchingly Stakes on Saturday after a four month break, with Wallace confident the High Chaparral gelding can take it out from barrier one.
Drawn ideally and coming off an impressive hitout over 900m at Doomben, Shoot Out looks well poised to win on Saturday and begin his ambitions spring campaign with Wallace nominating Shoot Out for $3million Cox Plate and the $6million Melbourne Cup.
It is a classy field Shoot Out must beat in the Bletchingly, with other top chances including local veteran Royal Ida (#3 – Br. 10) who ran third in the Listed J Monash Stakes (1100m) here last start, J Monash runner-up Keano (#7 – Br. 4) trained by Danny O’Brien, and improving gelding Tollesprit (#9 – Br. 3).
But Shoot Out’s biggest dangers will come from two classy mares, horses 10 and 11, Velocitea and Elumino.
The Mick Price-trained Velocitea has drawn midfield in the Bletchingly Stakes with barrier six, the impressive Volksraad mare running in their first race since winning the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville back in May.
Velocitea’s Goodwood victory was the culmination of an impressive summer/autumn campaign that also included a second to Rostova in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m).
At good odds Velocitea looks a great value bet to win at Sportsbet.
The other horse with claims is the Peter Moody-trained Elumino.
Drawn ideally in barrier two, the rising five-year-old mare took out the prestigious Victorian Sprint Series at Flemington at the start of the month, has a consistent record over this distance and looks an excellent Each Way bet through Sportsbet.
The 2010 Bletchingly Stakes is scheduled as race number six on Caulfield’s bumper eight-event card for Saturday and is due to jump at 3:07pm.
