Howard Wilson’s improving three-year-old Fifteen Carat claimed his second stakes victory in as many starts on Saturday when he outclassed his rivals in the $75,000 Listed Tattersalls’ Mile (1600m) at Eagle Farm.
Show A Heart gelding Fifteen Carat has had an impressive winter campaign, placing third to Rothesay in the Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1600m) last month and then winning the Listed Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m) last start.
On Saturday Fifteen Carat went out as the $3 favourite and was able to run down a gallant Sunshine Coast Guineas runner-up Bold Glance ($4.80) in the final strides to claim victory by a short-head.
The David Murphy-trained Deacon ($11) was a further one and three quarter lengths away for third.
Silver Spur, the $3.40 second favourite, over raced in the mile and had to be taken to the front at the 800m. After failing to settle Silver Spur then did well to hang on for fourth.
The winner was ridden by a patient and relaxed Glen Colless, the hoop filling in for Fifteen Carat’s regular jockey Stathi Katsidis who was out with the flu.
Fifteen Carat, trained at the Gold Coast, has now won four of their 15 career starts for $241,900 in prizemoney.
His two last start victories have earned him a Sydney Spring Racing Carnival campaign, with Wilson naming the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) at Randwick on October 2 as Fifteen Carat’s primary target.
Epsom Handicap Day is the biggest meeting of the spring in Sydney featuring three other Group 1 races: the Spring Champion Stakes (2000m), the Flight Stakes (1600m) for three-year-old fillies and The Metropolitan Handicap (2400m).
