Five-year-old Rubiton gelding Mr Unforgettable claimed an upset win over the weekend when he defeated a classy field of contenders in the $100,000 Listed MYER Winter Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill on Saturday.
The Kevin Moses-trained Mr Unforgettable started at $14 and held on to defeat Peter Moody’s gallant mare Ghostmilk ($4.80) by a long-head with $4 favourite Adnocon a mere nose away for third.
It was a thrillingly close finish with less than a length separating the first five over the line, and a promising return to form for Mr Unforgettable who had his Brisbane Winter Carnival campaign marred by a nasty virus.
After racing neck-and-neck over the final 150m with Adnocon, Mr Unforgettable surged forward in the final strides to secure the win and give 18-year-old jockey Blake Spriggs’ first black type success and his fourth win of the day.
Spriggs other wins included his victory in the opening feature aboard Gai Waterhouse’s promising young runner Crossbow on debut and now on way to the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.
Mr Unforgettable has now won six of his 28 career starts for over $400,000 in prizemoney.
There was plenty of excellent back-type racing on Saturday around the country, with the other highlight being the $100,000 Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m) won by the Peter Moody-trained Reward For Effort.
The quality three-year-old Exceed And Excel colt had his Golden Slipper chances ruined by a heavy track at Rosehill back in April, when the Blue Diamond winner finished seventh to Phelan Ready.
Reward For Effort showed great improvement on Saturday when he held off a late challenge by Keano to win by a short head in the Sir John Monash, his third victory from just five career starts.
The spring racing season kicks off at the end of this month when group racing resumes with the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield.
