This year the time-honoured Ballarat Cup will be run on a Sunday instead of its traditional Wednesday timeslot for the first time in the race’s 156 year history, still marking the end of the coveted Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.
The move falls as part of a rescheduled listing of Spring Carnival events by the Victorian Racing Club (VRC), who in agreement with Country Racing Victoria and the Ballart Turf Club have announced the Ballart Cup’s 2010 date as Sunday, November 21.
The Sunday Ballarat Cup meeting is at this stage a one off for 2010, with the Ballarat Turf Club hoping to secure a Saturday race date in the future to further insure the stability of the event.
After a change to the Public Holiday schedule in Victoria, the Ballarat Cup move ensures the anticipated race meeting remains a Public Holiday for the city, the weekend position increasing the status of the event.
The $130,000 Listed Ballarat Cup (2,200m) should then attract a larger crowd then its previous mid-week runnings, giving the Spring Carnival a spectacular send off.
The Melbourne Spring Carnival is Australia’s most prestigious horse racing event and features a brilliant line-up of quality Group 1 events including Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and of course the renowned Melbourne Cup.
