Listed Racing This Weekend – Caloundra Cup Preview

With the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival over for another year, there are still plenty of top class Listed races left to take place in Queensland over the next few weeks to keep racing fans excited in the lead-up to the coveted Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

Black-type racing moves to the Sunshine Coast this weekend for the $200,000 Listed Caloundra City Cup (2400m).

Three stablemates to this year’s Group 3 Doomben Roses winner Marheta will represent Mike Moroney in the Cup on Saturday. Flemington-based trainer Moroney has nominated five-year-old Calatrava, Red Ransom mare Prix Du Sang and six-year-old Pentire gelding Tinseltown for the feature.

Tinseltown has had an unlucky Brisbane campaign this winter, finishing sixth in the Group 3 Premier’s Cup before a too-firm track left saw him come in ninth in the Group 2 Brisbane Cup last start. Moroney is hoping a good barrier draw and more suitable ground conditions will see Tinseltown secure victory in the Caloundra Cup on Saturday.

Another top Caloundra Cup contender is the Robert Heathcote-trained Our Lukas coming off two consecutive wins including the talented stayer’s victory in the Listed Ipswich Cup (2150m) last start. Our Lukas has been allocated a hefty 58kg in the Cup, and if he carries that weight to victory on Saturday he will set a new record.

Last start Group 3 Tattersall’s Cup runner-up Indikator, seven-year-old Fulmonti and the John Wheeler-trained Court Ruler are also expected to run in the 2010 Caloundra Cup.

Other highlights at the Sunshine Coast Turf Club meeting include the $175,000 Listed Glasshouse Handicap (1400m) and the $100,000 Listed Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m) for three-year-olds.

Rosehill in Sydney and Perth’s Belmont Park are also hosting Listed races this Saturday with the $100,000 Civic Stakes (1400m) and the $75,000 Belmont Oaks (2000m).

The next Group status race on the Australian Racing Calendar takes place on Saturday July 31st when the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) runs at Caulfield.
