Australia’s highest rated mare Typhoon Tracy became a five time Group 1 winner on Saturday when she annihilated her rivals in the $400,000 Queen of the Turf Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill’s Golden Slipper meeting.
The Peter Moody-trained Typhoon Tracy began as the hot $1.40 favourite and ran a brilliant gallop, defeating long-priced roughie Illuminates ($41) by a comfortable 2 lengths with the Gai Waterhouse-trained Montana Flyer ($31) a fast finishing third, a length further back.
The 2010 Queen of the Turf Stakes became a bit of a one horse race after the other highly fancied runner, More Joyous from the Waterhouse stable, was scratched on Saturday morning. It was another disappointment in an Easter Saturday marred with frustrating results for Waterhouse as she failed to secure a Group 1 victory on the day.
Her odds-on favourite in the Group 1 The BMW Theseo placed fourth to surprise winner Littorio, but her biggest success on the day came in the $3.5million Group 1 Golden Slipper. While her more fancied runner Brightexpectations ran a well beaten 12th, More Strawberries managed to finish a gallant third behind Crystal Lily.
Waterhouse did manage one win on Saturday in the closing race of the day when Swift Alliance took out the $125,000 Group 3 The Sebring Stakes.
Eventual third placegetter in the Queen of the Turf Stakes, Montana Flyer held the lead early on but on the home straight the unfaultable Typhoon Tracy with Luke Nolen aboard stormed to the lead coasting to a then unchallenged victory.
Typhoon Tracy, well on track to take out the next Australian Horse of the Year award, now boasts an impressive record of 10 wins from 13 career starts for over $1.95million in prizemoney.
The outstanding daughter of Red Ransom will next appear in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Randwick on April 17, for which she is currently the clear favourite at $3.60 with [iasbet].
