Promising three-year-old Shamardal filly Faint Perfume gave renowned trainer Bart Cummings his first Group 1 victory at Rosehill since 1997 when she took out the $400,000 Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (a.k.a. Storm Queen Stakes) on Saturday.
After sitting well back in the field for much of the race, Faint Perfume ($4.60 EF) gave the spectators a thrilling finish when she chased down leader and arch rival Valdemoro ($8.50) in the final seconds to score by a half neck, with roughie Absolute Faith ($51) a well beaten third 5 lengths away.
Jockey Michael Rodd rode a patient race holding Faint Perfume off until the very last moment giving Cummings his first win in a Group 1 race win at the Rosehill track since his Storm Queen victory with Danendri in 1997.
Equal favourite Set For Fame ran a disappointing race finishing ninth after the soft track and taxing 2000m distance proved too hard for her to overcome.
Faint Perfume will next run in the $350,000 Group 1 Australian Oaks at Randwick on April 17, where she will again face off against Valdemoro.
