Military Rose Wins Magic Millions Classic

On Saturday the Gold Coast Racecourse held their biggest race meeting of the year, the coveted Magic Millions Raceday, headlined by the state?s richest race, the $2million BMW Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m).

The prestigious and lucrative sprint event was taken out by local runner and clear favourite, the Gillian Heinrich-trained Military Rose ($4) in sensational style, finishing nearly four lengths ahead of John O?Shea?s Ambers Waltz ($8) with Demanding Miss ($9.50) a gallant third.

Now undefeated in four starts, Military Rose became the first Gold Coast-trained horse to claim the Classic since Snippets in 1987, and was ridden to victory by Stathi Katsidis, current leader of the Australian Riding Premiership with 87 wins.

Heinrich purchased the General Nediym filly for $155 000 at last year?s MM yearlings sale and Military Rose will now be aimed at the richest two-year-old race in the world, the $3.5million Golden Slipper in Sydney on April 3.

It was a devastating finish for second favourite in the pre-race betting markets, the Tony Gollan-trained Sprit Of Boom ($4.60) coming in a well-beaten 14th following a slow start.
