The Listed Herald Sun Stakes has been won by Strawberry Field in a last minute dash to the finish line.
With only eight lengths between the first and last place-getters, the 1400m event was a bunched up race with short priced favourite Ortensia finishing second in front of Rose Syrah.
Tootsie was first out to take the lead early followed by Viking Turf Belle, Romneya and Alverta.
At the swing to the turn, Tootsie continued to maintain the lead however coming into the final 300m the pack tightened up.
Strawberry Field came from the outside and put her head down right to the finish line.
Ridden by jockey Craig Williams, Ortensia had no luck on the straight despite being the shortest priced favourite at just under $3.
Strawberry Field’s trainer John O’Shea said she travelled beautifully after coming third in the Stradbroke Handicap.
“She has a good turn of foot when she is allowed to relax”, said O’Shea.
Her jockey Nicholas Hall agrees with O’Shea saying that the four year old mare acclimatised well despite the head on wind which affected many of the front runners.
