It’s just one more sleep until the most anticipated event in Australian racing and with more than $6.5 million in prize money on the cards, the day will most definitely attract an outstanding group of racehorses. The 2009 Melbourne Cup Day will feature a total of 10 races including four Listed races and the most prestigious race, the Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup. The day commences at 10.20 with the Listed AGL Renewable Energy Stakes and concludes at 5.15 with The Tab Big6.
Worth $5.65 million, the Melbourne Cup will commence at 3.00pm and includes a total of 24 runners. Included in the final field is 2008 Melbourne Cup winner Viewed as well as Bart Cummings’ Roman Emperor and Allez Wonder. One of the most talked about horses is Jake Stephens’ Alcopop, currently ranked 11th in the final field. A favourite among the bookmakers, Alcopop is set to cause a stir in tomorrow’s race.
Preceding the Melbourne Cup is the Listed Lexus Hybrid Plate, a set weights and penalties race for three year old fillies. The most experienced horses in this event will be Majestic Music and Kanzan. However with Corey Brown riding Tim Martin’s Indian Ocean, she may be the filly to watch in this event.
The Johnnie Walker Stakes will feature four international horses including Sound Of Nature from the USA and three New Zealand contenders. Ice Chariot is the leading contender in this race however the gelding will have to put up a fight against NZ import Majestic and 12-time winner Sandhill Prince.
