Bendigo Cup – Last Chance For Melbourne Cup Start

Today’s $150 000 Listed Jayco Bendigo Cup (2200m) will be the final lead-up race for a number of Melbourne Cup hopefuls including topweight entries Capecover and Gallions Reach.

The seven-year-old gelding Capecover had apparent feet problems earlier in the season but is now one hundred percent better, fit, in form and ready for the race according to his New Zealand trainer Alexander Fieldes.

Racing Victoria’s chairman of stewards for the Bendigo meeting, Peter Ryan, has said that Capecover will still have to undergo a veterinary examination upon arrival at the rural Victorian track.

Capecover is currently 27th in order of entry for the Melbourne Cup while equal top weight in today’s race carrying 59kg, Gallions Reach, is 25th. It will be the last run for both Kiwi gallopers before the famous Flemington handicap on November 3, with the Richard Yuill-trained Gallions Reach needing a top three finish to necessitate a Cup start.

Capecover will be ridden by Kerrin McEvoy and will be hoping to make up for his unlucky run in the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) last start when he finished nine lengths behind winner Alcopop in seventh.

Jockey Craig Newitt has the mount on Gallions Reach, who is also looking to bounce back after a dismal Australian debut last week that saw the gelding finish 13th nearly 12 lengths back from the winner.
