Last year’s AAMI Vase was won by Whobegotyou, the star galloper now topping the betting markets for this year’s coveted $3million Cox Plate.
It is little wonder then that the punters and racing enthusiasts are keen to keep a close eye on the Group 2 AAMI Vase runners this year, with hopes of spotting a future racing champion.
In a small field of only eight starters, some of the best trainers have horses entered including Danny O’Brien with Spacecraft ($8.50) and Gai Waterhouse with Spring Champion Stakes placegetter Viking Legend ($4.50). Another quality performer due to run in the 2400m race tomorrow is Tony Vasil-trained Carrara ($4.40) who will be ridden by Corey Brown.
The strong field of emerging runners will give O’Brien a good indication on the prospects of his last-start Caulfield winner Spacecraft for the Victoria Derby. A win tomorrow will ensure the three-year-old colt a start in the Derby Saturday week.
The AAMI Vase has been the best form race for the Derby in recent years and another entry tomorrow on the Derby path is Extra Zero.
Extra Zero is one of only two rides jockey Brad Rawiller has secured this Cox Plate Day, but may give the hoop another victory as Extra Zero is currently the $3.70 favourite.
Also due to start is South Australian filly Miss With Attitude ($6.50). Miss With Attitude is set to take on the boys as the only filly in the race and will be ridden by Clare Lindop.
She is aimed at the VRC Oaks later in the carnival and connections thought the AAMI Vase presented a good preparation race that will allow her a break between runs. The three-year-old bay by Galileo from Sizzie ‘Em, finished sixth in her last start in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas.
If she wins tomorrow she will be the first filly to take out the AAMI Vase since Rockets Galore in 1990, who came via a 10th in the Thousand Guineas.
