Viewed Penalised For Melbourne Cup

Last Saturday’s Caulfield Cup winner Viewed has been penalised an extra 1kg for the 2009 Melbourne Cup bringing his weight to 58kg.

The six year old will join Efficient to carry the top-weight for the Melbourne Cup, which is an increase of 5kg from the horse’s winning weight in last year’s Cup.

The horse was handicapped today by Greg Carpenter, who has stated that Viewed’s Caulfield Cup win has proven that he is one of the greatest stayers of the modern era.

In the past thirty years, 26 horses have run with 58kg or more however the only horse to win with this weight was Makybe Diva, proving how tough it will be for the two favourites to succeed in the $5.5 million race.

The battle between the two Cup favourites will prove interesting as Bart Cummings is looking for his 13th Cup win with Viewed whereas Lloyd Williams, one of the most powerful owners in the country, is eager to win his fourth Melbourne Cup win with 2007 winner Efficient.

Third declarations for the Melbourne Cup close next Monday.

There has been much debate regarding the leniency of Viewed’s 1kg penalty. He won the Caulfield Cup by 2 lengths and to receive such a small weight penalty seems strange. After all, Alcopop received a 1.5kg Melbourne Cup penalty for winning the lower seeded Herbert Power Stakes. Viewed’s is the lightest penalty for a Caulfield Cup winner since Cole Diesel in 1989.
