Jolie’s Shinju Makes Comeback At Caulfield This Saturday

News - Spring Racing
16 October 2009

Acceptances for this Saturday’s Caulfield Meeting have been released with a total of 142 starters attending the event.

The biggest story of the day however is the comeback of Singapore mare Jolie’s Shinju (JPN) which will be competing in the Group 2 Harrolds Stakes (1400m) under jockey Vlad Duric.

The mare had her worst career run last month in the Listed JRA Cup where she ran second last to Alcopop.

After it was revealed that the five year old had an irregular heartbeat, her spring campaign was declared over and was ruled out of the Yalumba Stakes.

However after close monitoring by a remote ECG device during training Jolie’s Shinju was given the all clear to race again.

The Singapore sensation will be up against strong contenders Hot Danish and the Caulfield trained Typhoon Tracy.

After tomorrow’s race, Jolie’s Shinju may go on to compete in the 2040m Cox Plate.

Saturday 17th October Caulfield Races:

1 – 11.30 Arrowfield Stud Plate (1400m)

This 1400 metre race for three year old fillies is seeing some serious contenders including Lee Freedman’s Baby Corn and Impulsive Dream. Damien Oliver will be riding the David Hayes trained Azwa, which is carrying 58kg. With a total of 12 entrants, Off The Planet is carrying a mere 53.5kg while Baby Corn and John Thompson’s So Anyway are both carrying 59kg.

2 – 12.10 Jayco Stakes (1400m)

Worth $100,000, this 1400m race features Danny O’Brien’s Savaging and Lee Freedman’s The Comedian. Peter Snowden’s 3 year old Sigma stands a great chance with two wins to the colt’s name already including a 1400m event.

3 – 12.45 Sportingbet Plate (2000m)

This 2000m event has fourteen 3 year old filly runners starting on Saturday with John Thompson’s Run For Naara carrying the highest weight of 59kg. Six horses including Lee Freeman’s Absolute Joy and Mick Price’s Bellaafonte are carrying just 53kg.

4 – 1.20 AAMI Norman Robinson Stakes (2000m)

This Group 3 race is featuring just nine entrants including the well known OneMoreNoMore which is being ridden by Glen Boss on the day. With a handicapper rating of 101, the colt is carrying the highest weight of 58kg. Mark Kavanagh’s colt Shamoline Warrior just recently placed first in Flemington’s 1800m UCI Stakes under Damien Oliver so the 3 year old could prove to be a strong contender in the upcoming race.

5 – 2.00 Betfair Stakes (1400m)

The line up for the Group 3 1400m Betfair Stakes is quite even which will make the race a close finish. Gai Waterhouse’s Royal Discretion is weighted along with Anthony Cummings’ Solo Flyer and Brian Mayfield-Smith’s Orange County at 57.5kg. McClintock’s most recent win was a 1400m Randwick race in September whereas in the same race NZ horse Bryannbo’s Gift finished a dismal second last place.

6 – 2.40 Harrolds Stakes (1400m)

The competition steps again with the Group 2 Harrolds Stakes and its good line up of strong horses. Singapore’s Jolie’s Shinju makes her first comeback since her heart issue after the JRA Cup and Gai Waterhouse is running her 4 year old mare Gold Water who has had quite a good run in her last three races. Les Bridge’s 6 year old mare Hot Danish is definitely one of the stronger runners in the race however only placed fifth out of 16 contenders in her last 1410m race.

7 – 3.20 David Jones Cup (2000m)

There are 16 horses and four emergencies lined up for this year’s Group 3 David Jones Cup with the Hawkes’ 6 year old gelding Mentality carrying the highest weight of 57kg. There are ten horses carrying 53.5kg including Mark Kavanagh’s Shocking and Brian Smith’s New Zealand gelding Hume.

8 – 4.05 BMW Caulfield Cu (2400m)

The event will feature plenty of quality horses including C’Est La Guerre, Master O’Reilly, Roman Emperor and the Irish Kirklees.

9 – 4.50 Perri Cutten Caulfield Sprint (1100m)

Anthony Cummings’ stallion Turffontein is carrying 58kg in this Group 2 race however the five year old is yet to win a race under 1200m. Damien Oliver will be riding David Hayes’ four year old gelding Eagle Falls, which has quite a good chance after winning two of his most recent 1200m sprints. There are a total of 14 entrants in this race including the Lee Freedman trained First Command.

10 – 5.30 Pure Blonde Plate (1100m)

With 16 entrants in this race, Amberino is carrying a whopping 61kg while David Hayes’ Hukba is only carrying 53kg. Amberino has won 9 out of her 33 career starts whereas Gordon Richards’ four year old mare Jaalippy has already won 5 out of her 11 career starts.
