After winning his first weight-for-age race, Victorian Jockey Danny Nikolic believes Mic Mac is real star in the making.
The 4 year old took out the group 2 Memsie Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday and will have no problems in the 1600 metre Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes on September 12th.
In the 1400 metre stakes, $3.10 favourite won by 1 lengths ahead of runner up Whobegotyou and Melbourne Cup winners Viewed and Efficient who finished fourth and fifth respectively.
The race was not won with ease, with the Greg Eurell-trained gelding being challenged on the turn for home however both Eurell and Nikolic are confident that the horse will pick up for the upcoming Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes.
Replacing suspended jockey Damien Oliver, Nikolic thinks the horse needs an extra 50 kg on him before the race and is hopeful the horse will be able to handle the Cox Plate later on in the year.
However bookmakers are not as confident about the horse’s chances, with Mic Mac at $17.00 and Whobegotyou entrenched as the $5.50 favourite.
If Mic Mac qualifies for the 2040 metre Cox Plate, it will be the first long distance race the horse has competed in.
The promising gelding has a won a total of 7 out of 8 races, including the group 2 (1400m) Hobartville Stakes.
